Rosedale Landcare News

September 2012

Since the Rosedale Association 2012 AGM at Easter a small but dedicated group of Rosedale Landcare workers have been slowly but steadily working on several projects to help maintain and encourage the natural flora & fauna of our area.

The primary focus has been at the main car park where weeding, pruning, mulching and regeneration plantings of Lomandra & Westringia have taken place.
The lack of rain and strong winds have meant that watering by hand every 10- 14 days have been needed and so far all plants have survived and are showing signs of healthy growth.

We have had many visitors and locals complementing us as they pass by on the way to or from the main beach. We have also targeted the Bridal Creeper weed that was a focus at the Easter weed-a-thon.
The combination of the 2 activities has seen quite a noticeable reduction of the infestation but, a careful eye will be needed to keep it under control.

The gully and bank that runs adjacent to "The Retreat" and down onto Nuns Beach has also had major work done. Assistance through a grant, from the Batemans Bay Local Aboriginal Land Council – Koori Crew, resulted in a huge clearing of Turkey Rhubarb, Senna and Blackberry.
The banks were reinforced with logs and native grasses and Westringia were again planted to try to prevent further soil erosion.

A second round of work has just been completed as a combined Landcare and  “Retreat” funded effort.
Michelle Tribolet – Eco Friend Garden & Bush, who has been doing the majority of the work at Banksia Flat was engaged to lead a weed management effort in the gully with a few Rosedale Landcare volunteers.
Four hours of work was done on the first day and the area has now had a follow up targeted weed spray.
We now have 80 seedlings to plant out by the end of September.

Blackberry spraying was undertaken by the ESC in May with a follow up spray planned for October.
We are currently putting a map of Blackberry and Bitou Bush together to assist the council workers identify problem areas.

November 2012

Over the last 2 months, small group of Landcare volunteers in Rosedale have continued to monitor and maintain the main beach car park and the area  behind "The Retreat".

I am pleased to report that since the last newsletter in September we have had 2 significant rainfall events allowing hand watering to end and resulting in some visible new growth on both new and established plants at both these sites. Over 120 plants have been planted at the Retreat site and the area is certainly looking much better.

On Saturday 10th November, 5 Landcare volunteers worked for 3 hours weeding, pruning and doing a general tidy up of the small round garden at the very end of Cooks Crescent in the cul-de-sac. We removed a lot of dead wood from the trees and pruned back some shrubs and have made the area ready for some planting after the heat of summer. I think you will agree that the photos show a great result!   I thank Ian, Maurice, Noel & Colin for their assistance.

If you are happy and impressed with the work that has been carried out on the Cooks Cres cul-de-sac garden and feel that you would like to help with the funding of replanting with suitable natives, we would be most appreciable of any donations into our Landcare funds that might come our way.
You can give cash or cheques to any member of the committee or David Boardman who can receipt any donations. Alternatively you can donate by going to the bottom of this page and followthe directions in the PayPal system.

An Unfortunate Event.

We have recently been on the receiving end of some disturbing behaviour in Rosedale with some young people leaving their mark by painting graffiti on the rocks around Nuns Beach and on the point at Jimmy's Island (see images below). We can be thankful that several Rosedale locals worked very hard to remove the damage and luckily no trace of the damage remains.

The incident was reported to the police, the Batemans Bay Marine Park and the Eurobodalla Shire Council,(ESC) the only reply we received was was from ESC as follows: Council has determined that the land that the graffiti has been carried out is land not under the care or control of the Council. This land is the responsibility of either National Parks & Wildlife Service or Marine Park Authority. As you previously advised, some cleaning up of the graffiti has been undertaken by locals and Council is very grateful at the pride the Rosedale community have in their local environment".

Other Issues:
Michelle Tribolet (private contractor) has recently completed the last of her hours in the Banksia Flat reserve. This marks the completion of works funded through the current Community Action Grant in Rosedale.  Further funding opportunities to support ongoing contractor hours in this area will need to be sought for 2013 and it will soon be time to look at what is available and
put in our submission. As there is no funding certainty at this stage we may need to consider spending some Landcare $$$ until grant money comes through to enable work in weed control to continue- I shall keep you posted. The work so far has been enormously important and has had a huge impact on the health of the native flora & fauna in the area known as Banksia
Flat.

     *     We will hopefully get an opportunity to spray the blackberry at the boatsheds in the coming weeks
     *     Council has been notified about damage done to some of the pine poles at the main car park and have been asked to
repair them as they are an injury hazard.
     *     Council have advised that their blackberry spraying of the Rosedale area will take place after the Christmas holidays in
            Feburary.
     *     Asparagus Fern is really getting out of control in many gardens and areas around Rosedale. We ask that if you are
down over the summer holidays to please help us by removing what you can from your gardens.

If you require any advice or assistance please contact me.

Dune Daisy

Dune Daisy - A threat to Rosedale beaches
I recently spent 4 hours at a Dune Care information session held at Broulee Beach.  It was run by Peter Gow who is the Eurobodalla Landcare Community Support Officer.
The afternoon was most informative and enjoyable. We noticed dune daisy growing in several spots which is a threat to our beaches. It has been introduced from South Africa and has become a huge problem but has only recently been spotted in our Eurobodalla area. Please help us keep this one out of Rosedale. It is easily removed by hand and should be discarded in the rubbish.

The next Landcare activity is on Thursday 13th Dec at 09.30 Main Car park.
We will be working with some members of the Koori Crew who have assisted us on 3 other occasions- any helpers gratefully
welcomed!!

Please revisit this site for upcoming news and acitivitis and also for a quick and easy way to donate to Landcare funds to help us with our work.

If you have any suggestions or concerns about work needed in your area of Rosedale please let me know.

Cheers and thank you
Jane Enright
